What is live in Care?

Live in care is where a fully trained carer will move into your house and live with you or a loved one in order to support you or your loved ones needs on a daily basis.

What are the benefits of live in care?

A live in carer would be on hand throughout the day to assist with any tasks that you or a loved one might have, as well as providing reassurance and companionship.

Live in carers can help not just with specific care needs, but more general day to day things around the house too. Whether you need support with personal care, assistance with washing and dressing or bathing, help with medication or even more specific care needs, live in carers are on hand and here to help whenever you need them. There are also lots of day to day tasks that can sometimes become a bit more difficult as we get older, which a live in carer can help with too. More general tasks such as help with cooking meals, housekeeping and light domestic help such as vacuuming, ironing or doing the dishes, running errands, helping with grocery shopping, support getting to and from appointments and even walking the dog or feeding pets are all things that a live in carer can help make easier for you or your loved ones.

Another fantastic benefit to live in care is that having a carer on hand throughout the day allows for much greater flexibility to go about daily life. Whether that’s having a lie in on the weekends, eating dinner at different times of the day or arranging appointments for whenever you like, your live in care package is flexible around your needs. Friends and family don’t need to rely on visiting hours to come and see you and your support can change, with your live in carer helping as much or as little as you would like them to on any given day.

A live in carer also provides a huge amount of peace of mind. Knowing that someone is on hand throughout the day, or there to provide extra reassurance at night, you can sleep soundly knowing that your loved ones are being looked after.

Live in care is a fantastic alternative to a residential home, or moving to supported accommodation as you or your loved ones can stay in the comfort of your own home, holding on to all the incredible memories that your house holds for you.

One of the other benefits to live in care is the companionship that it brings. Often when someone is living alone, or not being able to get out and about as much as possible, they can become quite socially isolated. A live in carer allows you to spend more time one on one with someone on a regular basis in comparison to other alternatives like residential care and form a lasting friendship along the way.

Is live in right for me?

Live in care is suitable for anyone who thinks that they may benefit from some extra help and support, with the flexibility of someone being on hand throughout the day. Live in carers can offer support to either one adult or a couple living together.

In order to know if a live in carer would be right for you or your loved ones, there are some things to consider and some questions to think about

  • Your live in carer would need their own room, so you would need enough space in your house for them to move in
  • You may want to consider if you would be happier with a male or female carer
  • You may need a live in carer who can drive, so they’re able to help with things like running errands
  • You may need a live in carer with some more specialist training to help with a specific need
  • Would you be happy for your live in carer to eat alongside you and your loved ones at mealtimes, or would you prefer this to be done separately.

Whilst a live in carer is available ad-hoc throughout the day, their typical working day is based on working for nine hours, so there may be instances where we need to put in additional support so that your live in carer can take a break during the day.

A live in carer is on hand throughout the night for reassurance, however if you are prone to sleepless nights or need more formal support throughout the night, then a waking or sleeping night package may need to be considered alongside your live in care package.

24 hour care and support

In some circumstances, a much greater level of support is needed than daily visits or live in care can provide. At Saxon Care, we’re able to structure packages to ensure your loved ones are supported and their needs are met, even up to 24 hours a day.

We are able to source additional training to work with clients who have more complex needs, to ensure they are cared for professionally and safely, giving you peace of mind in the knowledge your loved ones are safe and well in the comfort of their own home.
